Club Yacht 'Hera' Wins 1908 Olympics
Both yachts competing at the first London Olympics in 1908 were local due the strength of the 12-Metre class on the Clyde. Also, the usual Corinthian course from Hunter's Quay - Inverkip - Dunoon - Kilcreggan was used for the races on 11th and 12th of August.
The yachts were 'Hera' (designed and owned by Thomas Glen-Coats) and 'Mouchette' (designed by Alfred Mylne and owned by Charles McIver). Both owners skippered their own yachts with Hera wining by about one minute in both races.
As usual most of the attention was on the owners / skippers but two
interesting photographs from our archives show the full crews.
Hera's crew was all local and Mouchette's crew was mainly from the Liverpool area.
I would be interested in hearing from anyone with information on crew members (rather than the skippers).
