Team and Match-racing

The Club has a fleet of Sonars which allows for close, competitive sailing without the need for handicapping.

Throughout the year we host various team and match-racing events including the Ceilidh Cup (match racing) and the Millennium Bowl - a biennial team racing competition between the Royal Northern & Clyde Yacht Club, the Royal Thames Yacht Club and the Royal St George Yacht Club.

We also compete in a number of national and international events in the UK and overseas and run training sessions throughout the year to ensure our competitiveness in these events.

Gareloch OD

Designed and built by McGruer's from 1924 onwards, the Gareloch One Design Class is still going strong today.

The people who sail these fine yachts are a friendly and welcoming lot, racing every Tuesday evening and Sunday afternoon throughout the summer months.

Pipers

The Piper Class is possibly the largest modern one design class on the Clyde and recently celebrated their 50th Anniversary.

The RNCYC has historically been an active member of this Clyde class and races on Tuesday evenings throughout the summer.

Members also participate in the various weekend regattas during the season including the Piper Championships which is generally hosted by Royal Gourock Yacht Club.

The Class offers a modern Bermudan rig with a GRP hull and Class rules that enable participation without excessive cost.

Sonars

The Club has a fleet of evenly-matched Sonars, half-owned by the club and half-owned by club members

The Sonar fleet enables competitive, affordable one-design racing.  The Sonars race on Tuesday evenings in the Gareloch and Wednesday evenings on the East Patch and compete in various weekend events throughout the summer, both on their own in one-design races and as part of handicap fleets.

East Patch Racing

On Wednesday evenings throughout the summer, there is keelboat racing on the "East Patch"

East Patch racing calendar is jointly organised by RNCYC and Helensburgh Sailing Club and attracts boats from these clubs and keelboats from James Watt Dock in Greenock.
